Label TextOver a span of thirty years, Alfred Thompson Bricher painted numerous scenes of the coastline of Grand Manan, an island situated between New Brunswick, Canada and northern Maine. This work features a dramatic view of coastal rock formations with waves crashing against them. The contrast in scale between the two small, human-made boats and the towering rocks is a reminder of the insignificance of humanity compared to the power of nature.

This painting is different from many other works by Bricher and other painters of the Hudson River School in its vertical format. The landscape artists of this period tended to create expansive panoramic views expressed in large, horizontal works.
