Label TextDavid Benjamin Sherry captures a vast depth of field and high degree of detail with an analogue, large-format camera, creating prints that are often grand in scale. Once the film reaches the darkroom for developing, Sherry applies the monochromatic effects that have become his artistic signature. In All Matterings of Mind Equal One Violet, the natural browns and greens of land, sea, and clouds blend into a spectrum of purples, which introduces a surreal, dream-like quality to the mist mingling between the Pacific coast and the ocean. Inspired by early landscape photography but also informed by gay, environmental, and contemporary perspectives, Sherry’s imagery offers a view of the American West that visually and conceptually expands upon traditional representations.
