Label TextPatrick Joseph Caulfield began making screenprints in 1964, enamored with the reproducibility of precise images with rich colors and clear lines. As representations of inanimate every-day objects, Caulfield’s early prints belong to the still-life tradition in art. Whereas historical still-life depictions showed an interest in texture, detail, and decadence, Caulfield’s works—informed by Pop Art and popular imagery—emphasize bare-boned simplicity. He takes a focused shot of a normal scene and reduces elements to their most essential parts. Objects are flattened and sharp, outlined in comic-book-like black lines, and situated in even fields of bright colors.
