Label TextThis artist was a provincial painter working in Toledo in the late 1500s, which would have made him a contemporary of El Greco and the still life painter Juan Sánchez Cotán. This work illustrates the wide range of styles accepted in the transitional artistic period during the early reign of Philip III (1598-1621).

These oak panels once formed part of an elaborate altarpiece. In addition to these six panels, a traditional altar of the time would also have included a scene from Christ's Baptism and the Adoration of the Kings. The unpainted edges of the panels indicate that they were made in the artist's studio, and later inserted into the framework of the altarpiece from behind.
