These themes reappear throughout his oeuvre. Over the course of his career, the artist amassed a library of images, harkening back to his time at Black Mountain College when he dreamt of photographing the entirety of the United States “foot by foot.” However, Rauschenberg makes no effort to editorialize the specific locations that he photographs. Rather, he flattens his photographs, juxtaposing them against one another, attempting to obscure some images. Twombly and Rauschenberg appear as a double exposure on the bottom right. Taken in Venice in 1952, Rauschenberg accidentally superimposed this photograph with one of ancient architecture from Constantinople, Byzantine columns, and Renaissance towers. The image represents their formative experiences in Europe, and is a personal reference for Rauschenberg to the artists’ shared experiences in a variety of cultures. The collage is composed in a geometric grid, which is a preview of sorts for many of Rauschenberg’s later series, like the Photem works of 1991, in which he organized photographs into “totem poles of imagery.” LA
