Artist:Mickalene Thomas , Born in Camden, NJ, 1971 Title:Lovely Six Foota Date:2007 Medium:Chromogenic print Culture: American Dimensions:51 5/8 × 63 × 2 1/4 in. (131.1 × 160 × 5.7 cm) Credit Line:Gift of Christen and Derek Wilson (T'86, B'90, P'15) Accession number:2010.12.1 Label Copy: Working as both a photographer and painter, Mickalene Thomas's depictions of African American women explore notions of black femininity, sexuality and power. Her work draws on the work of 19th- and 20th -century European painters such as Manet and Matisse, as well as 1970s black film and fashion. The 1970s provides an important framework as a time of heightened social awareness and empowerment within Black Power and feminist circles. In Lovely Six Foota, Thomas has carefully constructed the period setting inspired by her childhood, from patterned clothes and wood-paneled background to the model's pose with legs slightly and suggestively open. Staring directly at the viewer and reminding us of popular Blaxploitation actresses like Pam Grier, Thomas's subject radiates sensuality and strength.
