Artist:Rineke Dijkstra , Dutch, born 1959 Title:Tamir, Golani Brigade, Orev Unit, Elyacim, Israel, May 26, 1999 Date:1999 Medium:Chromogenic print Culture: Dutch, Israeli Dimensions:70 7/8 x 59 1/16 in. (180 x 150 cm) Credit Line:Gift of the Rubell Family Collection, Miami Accession number:2010.10.1 Label Copy: Photographer and video artist Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her individual portraits, often shown in a series of multiple photographs. Dijkstra's knowledge of traditional Flemish portrait painting and German documentary portrait photography are clearly apparent. She often depicts her subjects in a frontal stance while looking directly into the camera before a minimal, seemingly insignificant background. This work is part of a larger series of photographs that capture the portraits of young Israeli conscripts. This psychological portrait photograph reveals Dijsktra's ongoing interest in the tense paradox between the individual and the collective identity, as well as nascent adulthood.
