Since the late 1970s, she has created a broad range of characters drawn from film, art history, TV, and the Internet that question identity formation and female stereotypes. Untitled #140 is from the Fairy Tales series, in which Sherman created grotesque and morbid scenes inspired by the darkness hidden within children’s fables. In this photograph, the artist poses as a disfigured woman with a bloodied face and a pig snout. She appears on the ground, at night, scared and insecure. The large scale of the closely cropped image lends the photograph an immense, haunting presence, but also leaves the viewer wondering about the scene’s context and how it relates to a larger narrative. Provenance: Metro Pictures, Inc., New York , NY until 1992. Christie Manson and Woods, New York, NY, October 8, 1992 sale, lot # 233, from there purchased by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.
