Label Text:The plan-map of Rome is a treasured artifact of the baroque period. It juxtaposes ancient, polytheistic Rome with the continuing seat of Catholicism. These are seen respectively at the bottom left and right sides in personified form. Equally, it combines the romance of ruins with detailed map-making of the highest standards. Architectural detail and precise scale are clearly evident. Quite apart from its beauty and impressive size, the Nolli map is remarkably accurate by modern standards, and is also admired for its presentation as a ground plan, which was unusual at the time, rather than a bird's-eye perspective.
