Label Text:Green Volkswagen is an example of Don Eddy’s early realist paintings of automobiles. Eddy is often called a Photorealist, a term the artist himself does not prefer. Rather than viewing his paintings as only precise, realistic reproductions, Eddy prefers to think of his process and completed works as deep explorations of the subject, perception, and life’s mysteries. His method is extremely complex. The artist first takes a photograph from which to work. Next, he creates a light sketch on canvas, followed by a three-stage underpainting process. During the underpainting stage, the artist uses an airbrush to create three different layers of paint that provide the basic color scheme of the painting. For the overpainting stage, Eddy may paint as many as ten to twenty thin, airbrushed layers, subtly building up color, to achieve a luminous, polished surface.
