Label Text:The subject of this work, a philosopher and his pupil, was a common theme in painting of the 1600s. The man is dressed in a dark brown habit covered by a black cloak. He and the boy are surrounded by books and papers, and both hold a large volume in hand, with the philosopher gesturing as the boy follows along in his own copy.

Although born and trained in Rome, Italy, Mola favored a palette and technique seen more in northern Italian paintings as evidenced by the skillful use of light on the philosopher’s face and the background landscape with a blue sky.
