Label Text:Disaster and violence are subjects that Christoph Draeger has been exploring since the 1990s. Crash is made entirely of images of midair collisions borrowed from news footage, Hollywood movies and amateur video, edited together into a crafted metaphor for real life catastrophe. The prolonged duration of the work is reminiscent of the repetition of endless replays of accidents and war that we see on the news. Consequently the work functions as a critique of the objectivity of news documents and the way in which images can exploitatively manipulate perception. This video, completed in 2000, was originally shown in a solo exhibition at Roebling Hall Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, just a week after the tragic events of 9/11. The exhibition had been scheduled many months in advance and is a hauntingly close example of art imitating life.
