Label Text:Kosterlitz's works show the response of a German émigré painter to her American surroundings in New York and New Jersey. Kosterlitz studied watercolor painting at the Bauhaus, the preeminent school of modernist art and architecture that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933. Among the teachers at the Bauhaus were Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee (with whom Kosterlitz studied watercolor). Upon moving to the United States, Kosterlitz spent most of her life in Morristown, New Jersey. The Windswept Tree with Birds (on the right) was inspired by a willow tree that sat on the shore of a pond in Kosterlitz's backyard until a devastating hurricane killed the tree in the 1980s.
