Label Text:Roy Lichtenstein is perhaps best known for his works appropriating the style, format, and techniques used in comic strips, but the artist also drew from familiar art historical works. In "Water Lilies (Pink Flower)," Lichtenstein reinterprets Claude Monet’s favored subject matter in Pop Art style, replacing hazy Impressionist blending with bold black lines and distinct areas of color. Lichtenstein’s inclusion of the Benday dots (the technique newspapers use to print in color) seen in comics provides a link to Impressionism’s similar method of using daubs of different color to make up an image.
