Label Text:This photograph originally formed part of a multi-media installation, Alchemy, created by Lyle Ashton Harris and his brother, filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris, which explored African American ancestry and the role of African spirituality across the Americas. The image captures a neglected but colorful interior space filled with various props and figures who represent both themselves and their ancestors. Through physical role-playing and live tableaus, Harris and his collaborators form timelines and cultural connections between the past and present. The title, Alchemy, refers to any magical process of transformation or recombination. Harris’s scene addresses the ever-changing yet perpetual links between world cultures that resist time and geography.
