Label TextEmerging in the 1980s from Southern Californian do-it-yourself (DIY) culture and the punk rock scene, Raymond Pettibon, a self-taught artist, began his career creating band posters and album art. He is best known for using imagery related to US literature, politics, religion, and sports to make stylized ink drawings and prints. Plots on Loan, which Pettibon worked on for more than seven years, is representative of his comic book and cartoon-like style. Like much of his work, Plots on Loan combines seemingly random imagery and text that Pettibon often borrows from his favorite authors, including Henry James, Marcel Proust, and William Faulkner, to create complex and mysterious messages.
