Label Text:Photographer and video artist Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her individual portraits. Dijkstra’s knowledge of traditional Flemish portrait painting and German documentary portrait photography play an important role in her work. She often depicts her subjects in a frontal stance while they look directly into the camera among a minimal, seemingly insignificant background.

This work is part of a larger series of photographs that capture young Israeli soldiers. This psychological portrait reveals Dijsktra’s ongoing interest in the tense paradox between the individual and collective identity, as well as nascent adulthood.
