Label Text:Over the past thirty years Christian Marclay has produced a broad body of work around the visualization of sound, including distorted sculptures of impossible musical instruments, such as Breathless III. Marclay drilled countless holes into this wooden recorder, rendering it physically unplayable. The artist has transformed a recognizable instrument into something that is no longer about the act of playing, but rather the humorous potential of sound, or lack thereof. By altering an instrument closely associated with childhood music class, Marclay enables a broad range of viewers to connect with the work through our personal memories of adolescence.
