Label Text:"Old Salem: A Family of Strangers" is a series of 20 portraits taken of hand-made cloth dolls from the Old Salem village in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The dolls were made by African Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries. In his original installation of the photographs, Wilson arranged them to be read as a family tree. "OLd Salem: a Family of Strangers" brings attention to the productive, but historically neglected African American community in the village.
