Label Text:"Elizabeth Murray's art," art critic Roberta Smith has written "has always been in motion and about motion." She enlivens the composition by adding the color red, and combines pure abstraction with references to shapes and forms from her own environment: ladders, easels, smoke, and the serrated edge of a knife or a saw. These are rendered in a cartoonish style; Murray was one of the first American artists to use the cartoon as source material. These literal shapes are set in motion, energized, as if the shapes are responding to internal and external pressures. This animated design seems to be changing before our eyes.
