Label Text:David Humphrey creates dynamic, dream-like narratives by constructing surreal, fragmented environments populated with bizarre subjects. The artist’s interest in exploring psychological and interpersonal boundaries results in his frequent use of sexually implicative imagery. In At the Office, a reclining, headless blue suit defines the scene’s unusual spatial boundaries. Though lacking a head, the blue suit has a hand that pulls back a curtain, revealing a far-off, towering office building. Papers are scattered on the floor around a woman typing at her desk. She looks up from her work, placing her left foot suggestively on the blue suit below her. The two figures in the foreground appear locked in an unpleasant embrace, contributing to the painting’s anxious, erotic overtones and further suggesting a commentary on gender dynamics in the workplace.
