Label TextThe artist and photographer Mimi Jacobs became well known in the San Francisco Bay Area for her portrait photographs of artists after Henry Hopkins, the director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, assembled them in his book 50 West Coast Artists: A Critical Selection of Painters and Sculptors Working in California (1981). The San Francisco art critic Alfred Frankenstein praised Jacob’s photographs for how she was able to bring out the artists’ “most characteristic attitudes, gestures, and expressions.” This is certainly true of how her camera captured Bruce Conner seated before one of his own mandala drawings. Her photograph pictures his wise, impish gaze and knowing eyes in an unusual moment when he granted momentary visual access to his keen intelligence and complex inner world. KS
