Label Text:Genevieve Gaignard’s work explores the construction and fluidity of femininity, class and cultural identity, as well as the myth of race. In each of her photographs, an aesthetic mix of street photography and cinematic stills, she performs different characters, shape shifting in ethnicity, culture, and class. The artist’s own mixed race allows for a flexible exploration of race and identity in her self-portraits. Part autobiographical, part allegorical, Gaignard’s work straddles time through semi-fictional imagery that loosely references iconic moments in popular culture and significant historical events.
