Label TextWriter and teacher John Rosenthal began taking photographs after a friend lent him a camera in the early 1970s. Inspired by the street photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson, he was drawn to the characters he saw in urban spaces and documented them in New York City, New Orleans, North Carolina, and elsewhere. The artist no longer photographs people, but instead captures rural and urban sites in a documentary fashion. He has stated “if [my photographs] can convey in some way [a] memory…then I think I have done my job.”
