Label TextLubaina Himid’s art addresses issues related to the lasting consequences of colonialism, slavery, and the marginalized histories of the African diaspora. A strong voice within the British Black Arts Movement of the 1980s, Himid has worked for decades to expose discrimination and to change the narrative of Western art through the representation of people and stories of the diaspora. This print incorporates her signature use of bold colors and shapes to humanize and call attention to the Black body. The image presents a fictional advertisement for the “Theatre of the Divine’s” production of Heavy Corners (for Joe), starring an imaginary Black actor named Demazana Fisher.
