Label Text:This unusual beaded panel is a memorial to a deceased twin (named Olarewaju Ajad) whose photograph is reproduced twice. Used in place of traditional wooden twin figures (ere ibeji), on view to the right, photographs emerged as popular alternatives, particularly among the urban elite. Like its original wooden counterpart, the twin memorial honors a deceased twin and appeases its spirit so as to protect the family against misfortune.
