Label Text:Elliott Erwitt was a well-known journalist and member of the international photographic cooperative Magnum. Often the master of the photographic one-liner, here he alters journalistic expectations by taking photographic freedoms. In a work that seems as though it could only have been made in England, a man in his street clothes, with his trousers tucked up, peers into the mysterious action of the water. Through framing the image with no horizon and no foreground, Erwitt turns a perfectly realist photograph of a man standing on a shallow beach into a dizzying flat pattern of water motion, incongruously punctuated by the appearance of a human figure. What could have been a straightforward documentary image shifts to emphasize the strangeness of our relations to the forces of nature.
