Label Text:Giovanni Paolo Panini was a leading painter of Roman topographical paintings of the eighteenth century. His work, especially from the 1730s, includes many building interiors, several scenes being repeated for the tourist market; northern Europeans visiting Mediterranean areas sought such paintings as souvenirs. The dark colors of this painting, with its threatening sky, underline the mystery of the ruins.
