Label TextThis gui-form censer features a meander-patterned body with decorative dragon carvings on the handles and lid. Small jade vessels in the form of ancient ritualistic bronzes were popular decorative objects for a scholar's studio. In the original bronze form that appeared in the 8th to 9th century BC, rings on the handles and lid would have chains strapped through to secure its position above fires. Imitation of archaic forms became widespread during the Ming dynasty, a period when scholars were deeply fascinated by the past, and avidly collected and studied art, literature and history.
