Label TextPatrick Heron was a leading artist and writer in the development of British post-war abstract art. His statement that “color is the only direction for painting” also informed his approach to screenprinting. Heron’s prints are composed of arbitrarily arranged floating shapes and explore how colors interact with and affect one another. Within the prints, the colored disks, ovals, and other irregular shapes collide, move through, and erupt from each other, creating a continuous conversation between forms. No one area of the image dominates; the complete visual experience lies within the whole of its disparate parts. This abstract print is an example of Heron’s larger artistic practice and illustrates his belief that “colour is both the subject and the means, the form and the content, the image and the meaning…”
