Label Text:Stuff up the Hole, Stuff Up the Crack is a rare example of Nikolai Panitkov’s artistic production separate from the conceptual group Collective Actions, which focused on performances and actions, as well as intense analysis of these events. This work illustrates his study of the behavior of material, as well as his effort to subvert the common idea that a painting is only a two-dimensional work, an idea manifest in the hole through the center of the canvas and the cotton batting stuffed around the cracks of the frame. The stuffing of all potential empty or open space also conjures memories of the censorship and regulation of artists in Russia, emphasizing the necessity to conceal and hide. TZ
