Born in the Soviet Union, he became a New York resident who fled his homeland. In the 1950s in Russia, he did constructivist style art which could have landed him in jail. His work from the 1960s and 70s has elements of surrealism and derangement. In 1973, he was thrown in jail for applying for an exit visa. Surreptitiously he made drawings of the gulag, which were smuggled out when he was released in 1976. He immigrated to NewYork in 1983. An exhibit of his work was held summer, 1998 at the Duke University Museum of Art in Durham, North Carolina.
He emigrated to NewYork in 1983.
