Rights and Reproduction Requests

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University prohibits the copying or reproduction in any medium of materials on this website with the following exceptions: limited non-commercial, educational, and personal use only that meets the criteria for fair use as defined in the U.S. copyright laws. Images from the Nasher Museum’s collection cannot be used for publication or commercial purposes without prior written permission from the Nasher Museum’s Registrar Department.

To promote scholarship and increase access to the Nasher collections, image requests by students, scholars and non-profits for existing photography will be provided at no cost. Should there be no existing photograph of a work of art, a fee will be determined on a case-by-case basis. This includes requests for exhibition catalogues, scholarly journals and scholarly books. Fees will still apply for commercial uses, and will be based on the specifications of the project.

To submit a request for an image from the Nasher Museum collection, please complete this image request form. For general inquiries, including image availability, please contact nasherimages@duke.edu or 919-684-8262.

Please allow up to two-three weeks for processing.
Upon approval of your project, you will be sent a contract for your signature.
The Nasher Museum must receive a signed contract before digital images are delivered.

With Nasher Museum approval, new photography may be ordered for works in the collections for which photographic and/or digital images are not available. Additional costs for new photography may be applicable.

The Nasher Museum may not own the copyright of works of art depicted in the image(s) and assumes no responsibility for any claims by third parties arising out of your use of the image(s). You are responsible for obtaining all other permissions required for your use of the art object(s) and the image(s).

The Nasher Museum reserves the right to deny any request.
